ICQ morons

December 14th, 2005 by teemow

A friend of mine is having problems with her ICQ lately. Strange people contact her all the time. Some German most of them Turkish. She doesn’t why this is happening, but those people are not going away. I found two other blog posts about it, seems there is something weird going on with icq. If this will happen to me I’ll completly switch to jabber. You’ll find my jabber account here.

“…ICQ… Did the Germen’s just discover it? I’ve had ICQ for about as long as I’ve had a computer. It’s a pretty dormant account since, well, it’s just boring. I can’t even remember the last time I got a message on it. Suddenly, this week, my account has come alive. I am getting over twenty IMs a night from mainly people in Germany. I thought it might have been spam or the such. They seem legit though. No links, no files, just ‘hi’s and some such stuff. Thing is, they don’t seem to understand the concept of time zones or away messages. I’ve even had one who started cussing out my away message in German. Some of these are pretty entertaining to find. I’ve now put a filter/away message up on my Trillian (the program I use for ICQ) that isn’t too nice, but these people are annoying me. Hmm, people annoying me… story of my life.”

“Update, later on Sunday night: Next in line: Some strange moron from Turkey. Totally unable to answer simple questions. I have started insulting him, as I will with anybody who contacts me out of the blue on ICQ and then is too dumb to put two words together in a way that makes sense.”

Ok, I just found a post about a cooperation between ICQ and ProSieben. ProSieben Media AG is a big private TV network in Germany. I don’t know if this has to do with the sudden amount of stupid deutschbags in icq, but there are also lots of Turkish people living here in Germany.

The wave of ICQ weirdness has stopped for me. As far as I can tell - the people who contacted me had IQ’s way below room temperature - they really did find me thru the normal ICQ search.

What prompted this temporary surge, I can not say. In Germany there were some commercials for ICQ on TV, but that would only explain things if I had been contacted by Germans.

    It remains a mystery :-(
