Switched to Ubuntu
November 14th, 2005 by teemowLast week I got my desktop/server working again. A few months ago my old Pentium 1GHz said goodbye. Now a Sempron 2800+ with 1 GB RAM is doing its job. I replaced my X-less Gentoo with Ubuntu Breezy. Up and running in 30 Min. Enjoying the fresh gnome installation I thought about how much time I already wasted to get a bleeding edge gnome with gentoo. Its really nice to have a gentoo system built from scratch and configure everything with your use flags, but compiling wastes a lot of time and I now decided after 2 years using gentoo on all my machines to also reinstall my notebook with Ubuntu, which was also a good point to kill my windows xp (no need to waste space on my harddisk).
It was definitly a great experience to use Gentoo and I really appreciate all the work people are doing to develop and maintain Gentoo packages (sorry michael!
). I loved to use portage and the ebuilds are a very neat way to compile everything from sources, but from a productive point of view I definitly loved it too much. Projects like Gentopia and Breakmygentoo are great, but tempting me all the time to play around with the new software versions. I came to the conclusion that I still like Gentoo on my server and I won’t replace it, but on a desktop it’s easier to have a binary distribution.

No need to be sorry! Just becauce I’m involved in Gentoo development doesn’t mean I’m overly biased. In fact I quite often recommend Ubuntu myself, mostly to friends who aren’t into computers too much but want to try out Linux.
Nonetheless I’ll consider you a traitor, at least until you buy me a beer at 22C3…
