baile funk - bass from the favelas

when i first came to paris, the only really new sound i encountered, was baile funk at this wicked brazilian bar, the favela chic at republique, notorious for their extremely ecclectic mixes (”die internationale” mixed with brazilian football comments followed by “hells bells” - long before soulwax). in short, baile funk is the sound of the favelas, influenced by violence, sex, drugs, brazilian beats and miami bass sound. the lyrics are extremly dirty, people doing all kinds of “it” while they dance (although not in paris).
favela chic has been promoting this sound for years. while their compilation a postonove 1 (funk tracks: 13, 14, 18) went no. 2 in japan two years ago, and they have heavily influenced the notting hill scene, it seems like the continent is only catching up now. the sole exception being dfkt and sci-fe in vienna who have been mixing it for years, too.
check out funky do morro, a vast and fast archive (500mb+) of mp3s fresh from the hills. (”as melhores” seems to be the greatest hits selection of the whole thing.)
for x-rated brazilian .avi footage, you might want to saddle your donkeys and look for “funk ritmo proibido”.
props to dfkt, guegge and susi.
